Steel is an important material indispensable to modern society, used in automobiles, roads, bridges, ships, buildings, towers and more, and supports our lives in a myriad of ways. Steel is a key industry providing various steel products for a broad range of industrial fields crucial to people’s lives.
Once it has served its purpose, steel is sorted and recovered as scrap, to be melted in an electric arc furnace (EAF) for recycling and sent back to society. Of the 110 million tons of steel produced annually in Japan, roughly 30% is recycled from scrap. We, Osaka Steel, are an EAF steelmaker, a specialist in this method of steel recycling.
Steel scrap is a very important resource for Japan, a country poor in natural resources. Our business mission is to contribute to the establishment of a recycle-oriented society by promoting the recycling of the Earth’s limited resources.
Osaka Steel, playing an important role as the principal EAF steelmaker of the Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Group, has steadily contributed to society as a leading general-shaped steel company. Having production bases at three plants-Osaka Unit’s Okajima Works and Sakai Works, and Nishi-Nippon Kumamoto Works, as well as at Nihon Steel Co., Ltd. (Kishiwada City, Osaka) and Tokyo Kohtetsu Co., Ltd. (Oyama City, Tochigi), our group companies-we recycle approximately 1.1 million tons of steel scrap annually and return it to society as new materials.
We manufacture diverse types of steel materials, including angles and channels used mainly for construction and industrial purposes, deformed bars for construction and civil engineering, elevator guide rails, flat bars, and square bars.
We are actively engaged in the manufacture of high value-added products, such as elevator guiderails and light rails, pursuing high dimensional precision, high surface quality, high strength and other features that make our products “high-end.” At the same time, we are determined to offer products that always satisfy the increasingly diversified needs of our customers by solidifying the Osaka Steel brand, supported by excellent quality in products and delivery.
Moreover, we have established a plant of PT. KRAKATAU OSAKA STEEL (KOS), a joint venture with a state-run steelmaker in Indonesia. Based in Indonesia, we are contributing to the development of the Southeast Asian region using the technologies we have cultivated in Japan.
In the 21st century, when the protection of the global environment has become a globally common issue, Osaka Steel will endeavor to promote both environmental conservation and corporate business activities. At the same time, we will continue our unceasing efforts to support people’s comfortable lives by providing society with recycled steel of ever-better quality.
We sincerely ask for your continued support for Osaka Steel.
